I Felt Right Sorry For Her. She seemed...

Tom Robinson: Looks like she didn't have nobody to help her. I felt right sorry for her. She seemed...

Prosecutor: You felt sorry for her? A white woman? You felt sorry for her?

Harper Lee knew what would be most offensive to folks: Tom Robinson putting himself at the same level as a white woman.  I see a parallel here with bittergate.

Sen. Obama clumsily speaks with empathy and Sen. Clinton goes for the kill by falsely suggesting Obama is talking down to PA voters because he has the temerity to speak the truth about some who are bitter and angry.  He also has the temerity to point out that instead of voting their economic interest, Republicans target many to vote on God, Gays and Guns -- none of which will bring back decent paying jobs.

I think he could have stated it better, but he certainly wasn't trying to divide the country with his statement.  Sen. Clinton, on the other hand, desperately hopes she can wield this weapon and define Obama as an elitist and everybody else -- including her -- as just ordinary optimistic folk.  (I know, just a few of us made 109 million dollars since 2000.)

I can hear Hillary now addressing Sen. Obama.  "You felt sorry for white people in small towns?  White people? In small towns?  You felt sorry for them?"

The temerity!

Keep this up Hillary, and no one will come around to bust up your chifforobe.

I don't think there was a racial context... (none / 0)

for Clinton's response, as you seem to suggest.  But you raise a valid point...I thought of that quote myself while watching the hullabaloo over "bittergate": "You felt sorry for REAL folks?"

It doesn't matter if you have a good reason to feel sorry for someone else...if they normally look down on you, they'll be outraged by your sympathy.  Sad, but true.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were no rhetorical questions?

Can't say there was...but if she ends up the beneficiary of a racial divide, I don't think she's losing any sleep over it.

And she's already up at 3 a.m.

Maybe that is the direction HRC and McNutty are hoping this will blow in some parts of the country....sad if that is the case though.

I read the body count out of the paper; now it's written all over my face.

Why do some Obama supporters have to bring race into everything? There was nothing even vaguely racially charged about what she said, and it's unfair to use that ghastly analogy.

I've seen a fair number of comments on this very board from Obama bashers that he was talking about "white people". One commenter said it 7 times in 4 sentences.

Then those people are dangerously stupid. The tendency to racialize everything in this primary has gotten ridiculous. Now, I'd like to give this particular diarist the benefit of the doubt and assume s/he was being somewhat facetious, but a lot of people are dead serious. This whole "Hillary's a racist who runs a racist campaign" and this "Obama hates typical white people" mentality has become pathetic and embarrassing. These people need to take a break from the internets.
